WEEK 4: CMC

Hello and salutation,

Well hello my beloved friends, as for this week's post, I will be posting about CMC. Have you ever heard of it? I bet you don't. CMC is the short form for Computer Mediated Communication.

Computer Mediated Communication is defined as any form of communication or interaction between two or more people via separate computers through network connection.

There are 2 types of CMC; Synchronous and Asynchronous

Synchronous - Communication between participants and it allows for direct communication. For example is Internet Chat rooms, messenger, video /  audio conferencing.
Asynchronous - The messages are not exchanged and replied immediately. For example is e-mails, internet forums and blogs.

CMC is also used in education  It started in the late 1980s and 1990s with the introduction of Communicative CALL. It has spread widely with the usage of e-mail and forums  Besides, internet char rooms allowed direct communication back in 1990. It also has been implemented for long-distance teaching or learning.

In addition, CMC is also used for collaborative learning. Computers can help to enhance peer interactions and group work  Not only discussions but also collaborative production of works and problem solving. For example Google Doc, Google Drive and Blogs Messenger.

CMC is also an authentic communication  CMC offers learners easy access and opportunity to communicate with other learners as well as native speakers. However, there are advantages and disadvantages about this authentic communication.

The advantages are; there is no distance barrier and makes collaboration easier.
Meanwhile the disadvantages are; it has problems with access to technology and lack of real human contact.

Well, perhaps this week's post could help you to learn something new. See you again on the next post.

Bye.
